Technical Philosophy

The Architecture of the "Honest Take"

In an era of infinite digital correction, I believe the most compelling recordings are those that capture the visceral energy of a singular moment. My philosophy at The Farm Studio is rooted in the belief that the technical must always serve the organic.

Whether I am engineering a solo literary interview for NPR, a 60-piece symphony broadcast, or a high-SPL desert sound camp, my goal is transparency and emotional impact.

I utilize a heritage-modern workflow—combining the harmonic warmth of analog signal paths with the surgical precision of high-resolution digital architecture.

By prioritizing microphone placement, room acoustics, and the psychological comfort of the performer over post-production "fixes," I ensure that the final mix retains its human soul. Precision is the tool; the performance is the point.

Precision is the tool; the performance is the point.

Sonics & Performance

Christopher Moyles is a Missoula-based audio engineer, music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and radio broadcast producer dedicated to the art of the captured performance. Operating out of The Farm Studio—a creative sanctuary set against the expansive landscapes of Western Montana—he has built a career at the intersection of organic instrumentation and modern studio precision. His work is defined by the search for the "honest take", a philosophy that blends the warmth of heritage analog workflows with the surgical clarity of the digital age.

The Studio & Production

Chris’ approach is rooted in a "musician’s familiarity" of the studio. As an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, he understands the arrangement and the emotional soul of a performance, ensuring that no detail is lost in translation from "the other side of the glass." To him, a recording is a record of a reflection of a moment in time—a singular, unrepeatable event that must be preserved with its original energy intact.

Specializing in multi-instrumental layering and organic-meets-modern production, he provides the final sonic polish for artists seeking an organic, yet detailed and intricate sound. His studio portfolio includes a diverse range of regional and national acts such as The Spills, Sasha Bell, Hugh Healow, The Gold Top County Ramblers, Rude Rock Family, Ceci y Pronto Alivio and The Other Side of Dawn.

Live Mixing & Broadcast

Beyond the studio walls, Christopher is a specialist in high-stakes audio engineering, from live front-of-house mixing to complex broadcast production. He has mixed definitive, world-class live classical broadcasts including The Missoula Symphony, The String Orchestra of the Rockies, The Sylvan Trio, and The Cascade Quartet, as well as the virtuosic compositions of Grammy-winner Mark O’Connor and Maggie O’Connor, as well as multi-grammy winner Bill Harley.

Through his broadcast engineering for the Montana Folk Festival and the International Choral Festival, he has captured a global spectrum of sound for the airwaves. Examples include high-profile sets from the legendary Cyril Neville (New Orleans Funk), Téada (Irish Traditional), Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca (Afro-Cuban), Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Cha's (Zydeco), Melody Angel (Rock/Soul)and Catharine Russell (Gospel/Soul), among many. Other genre mixes include celebrated jazz and swing acts like the Hot Club of Cowtown and the Western Flyers. His work with Jazzoula live broadcast highlights include Loren Stillman and Naomi Moon Seigel.

His expertise in live sound reinforcement is further highlighted by his work with The Woodtick Music Festival, where he has mixed sets for Reggie Watts, Mary Lattimore, The Minus 5, and Scott Yoder. His versatile live portfolio also includes engineering for The Polish Ambassador, capturing the harmonies of Junior, and delivering both live and radio broadcast mixes for Riddy Arman, alongside radio broadcasts from acclaimed Americana artists such as Margo Cilker, Gabe Lee, and Izaack Opatz.

Public Media Production

Christopher also serves as the Co-Producer for The Write Question, Montana Public Radio’s premier literary program. In this role, he brings technical precision to long-form conversations with the most influential writers of our time. His work includes a focus on the powerful voices of Indigenous literature—including Robin Wall Kimmerer, Joy Harjo, Louise Erdrich, and Tommy Orange—alongside celebrated authors like Colson Whitehead, Margaret Atwood, Anthony Doerr, and James Lee Burke. He has further engineered and co-produced high-profile interviews with iconic voices such as Nina Totenberg, Jeff Ament, Paula Poundstone, and Ailsa Chang for MTPR, NPR, and CBC Radio. Other production credits include Field Notes, Campaign Beat.

Community & Sound Art

Deeply rooted in the local scene, Christopher serves as the audio and production lead for FreeCycles, Missoula’s legendary community bicycle shop and climate justice hub. His work there has supported an immense variety of acts, from live square dances, to DIY punk shows including The Two Tracks, The Skurfs, Apollo Suns, Banshee Tree, as well as bluegrass from The TimberRattlers, North Fork Crossing, Blue Point and many others.

In August of every year, he returns to the Playa as the lead engineer for Funkytown, a city-block sized Burning Man sound camp and community art installation. At Funkytown, he manages a hand built, large-format sound reinforcement system for an elite roster of DJs and electronic artists that have included Ali B, The Polish Ambassador, Desert Dwellers, Fort Knox Five, Sacha Robotti, Mark Farina, and members of the Black Rock City Symphony.

Whether tracking in view of the Bitterroot Range, mixing a live symphony feed in real-time in a music hall, maintaining a hand-built, self-sufficient village/art installation in desert dust and heat, or facilitating a high school punk band’s first show in front of 500 people…his mission remains constant:

The technical must always serve the organic… everyone has a story to tell, and everyone deserves a curated, beautiful, safe space to tell that story.

A Final Thought

"I don't just capture sound; I preserve the intent behind it. From the quietest breath of a poet to the roar of a funk ensemble, the gear should disappear, leaving only the artist and the listener."
